Roof Museum is pleased to present "THE FAR SOUND," a solo exhibition by artist Kazusa Matsuyama.
Kazusa Matsuyama has attracted attention both in Japan and abroad with his "Anonymous Portraits" series (2020), which uses distorted facial expressions and abstract depictions to pursue not only superficial emotions but also the beauty that lies beneath the surface, as well as his derivative series "Daydream" (2022), which depicts people lost in fantasy and faded memories as if to add color to them.
In this exhibition, "THE FAR SOUND," the artist has depicted life and nature from a more flexible perspective, composing momentary expressions and states in fantastical scenes that are ambiguous in time and space while still retaining a sense of reality. Through the state of the works and their expression, which approach the relationship between the work and the viewer, the exhibition will be a place where you can enjoy a world of artworks that stimulates perceptions and sensibilities that go beyond the boundaries of visual art.
In addition, original KAZUSA MATSUYAMA × Lurf MUSEUM merchandise will be sold at the venue and on the website. The exhibition will run from Thursday, June 27th to Tuesday, July 30th, 2024.

statement
In his work, Kazusa Matsuyama has placed the viewer at the center of his pictorial expression, as a place where multiple meanings are generated from the stories he depicts in his works, in his "relationship between the work and the viewer."
While depicting everyday situations, he also creates fantastical, dreamlike scenes, depicting people with expressions that seem somewhat empty or as if they are lost in thought.
In his works, a sense of déjà vu and nostalgia are juxtaposed with a sense of incongruity and strangeness, and the carefully thought-out composition, colors, brush strokes, and all of these harmonize to complete a single world.
This is the very essence of the contemporary artist Kazusa Matsuyama's attitude of "not being influenced by the superficial trends of the times, but leaving behind in the form of artwork the universal beauty that lies within the roots and essence of human beings."
In this exhibition, "THE FAR SOUND," he brings more sensory elements and narrative to his recent series, "Anonymous Portraits" and "Daydream," depicting the existence of life and nature from a more flexible perspective.
This exhibition will feature a group of works that are the fruition of Kazusa Matsuyama's desire for pictorial expression that stimulates the viewer's reception and perception, based on his distinctive creative techniques of "flatly capturing space and objects" and "unique abstract depictions."
In today's society, where diversity is becoming more complex and change is rapid, I firmly believe that Kazusa Matsuyama's actions and works, which continue to depict the senses, emotions, and memories inherent in humans within the relationship between the work and the viewer, will become ``meaning and symbols of the times'' for future generations and will continue to be ``universal beauty.''
