The Luf Gallery will be holding the "LURF ANNUAL EXHIBITION 2024 - The Boundary of Sense and Memory."
"LURF ANNUAL EXHIBITION" is a series of exhibitions planned and curated by the Luf Gallery, held once a year to introduce the world of work by young artists who represent the next generation. This first exhibition will feature works by six artists with different perspectives and diverse expressions: Aimi Akiya, Ishiyama Miki, Shigihara Yuka, Nagano Aika, Matsuura Mioka, and Yoshida Shinpei.
The "boundary between sensation and memory" is not simply a physical line, but rather refers to the way our experiences, emotions, memories, and external elements intersect and influence each other, forming an ambiguous area. The artists participating in this exhibition also explore this boundary, visualizing its ambiguity through their works and offering viewers new scope for interpretation and contemplation. The exhibition will run from Friday, October 11, 2024 to Monday, November 11, 2024.

Taking the theme of image formation and perception in today's world where AI continues to develop, the artist creates paintings by using online images, photographs he has taken himself, and AI-generated images to create digital images, which he then hand-paints onto panel using tools such as an airbrush. The body images that appear throughout the paintings were created by the artist himself, combining body images generated by crossing multiple AI-generated models. In an age where social media such as Instagram has made it almost obligatory to commodify one's own body and life (to gain approval), by considering the desires and ideal body images that exist within this world together with AI, the artist explores the current state of humans, which exists at the border between reality and virtuality.

He creates his paintings by first applying a base coat to leave traces of his actions, then evenly soaking in thinly dissolved oil paints. This process is inspired by heliography, the oldest photographic technique, and is based on the idea that "landscapes are found in light." The quietly soaked colors become light, reflecting the landscapes in his mind.

The infinite space of "ma" is considered finite.
In Japanese painting, the composition of the picture plane places importance on the "space" between the figure and the white space, but in his own work he regards the space between the white space as light, and focuses on the ground of the picture plane, that is, the "finite space." By giving a white ground as light to the infinite space that was originally untouched, he aimed to capture the artist's sense of flesh, including the subtleties of time, humidity, seasons, etc. Rather than leaving the space and distance between things as they are on the canvas, by painting in white the space that at first glance seems infinite is illuminated by light and transformed into something finite.
The light of the ground influences the figure, and the relationship between the two becomes richer, expressing the lingering impression of space harmonizing with the object.
