[Artist Statement]

I learned dance when I was a child, and through practice I came into contact with various images outside of my body.

When I danced, I imagined delicate butterflies resting on my fingertips, so that I could reach every corner of my body, and when I slept, I imagined my body sinking deeper and deeper into a large, soft mass.

In this exhibition, I have been interested in turning these "Imaginary Shapes," images that existed only in my head, into paintings, and have created works based on this interest.

Some of the works on display are based on real experiences, while others express the realizations that came from tracing the memories of Imaginary Shapes and turning one's attention inward.

I would be delighted if this work, born out of repeated dialogue with myself, could speak to your hearts.

Maeda Mameko | Maeda Mameko

Born in Tokyo in 1993, she began working as an illustrator and artist in 2020. Influenced by the dance she learned from a young age, she became interested in expressing herself using her body, and she now draws plump figures, focusing on the beauty of the tension and wrinkles that arise from the body's expansion and contraction. Her humorous portrayals of open-minded characters have led to a surge in offers from overseas. She is expanding her activities globally, including being selected to exhibit at an art fair in South Korea.
