Mayumi Yamase
The elephant in the room
2022.9.16(Fri) - 10.30(Sun)
The Roof Museum will host a solo exhibition by artist Mayumi Yamase entitled "The elephant in the room." During the exhibition, Mayumi Yamase's first collection of works will also be published.
Mayumi Yamase, who studied fine art at the University of the Arts in London and is currently based in Tokyo and active in a variety of settings, presents abstract paintings and soft sculptures based on the theme of "things that are invisible but certainly exist," such as the inner workings of the body and the movements of emotions. Her sculptures, born from freely changing colors and shapes, express the primitive life that exists within. The exhibition title, "The Elephant in the Room," is an English phrase meaning "to turn a blind eye" or "to deliberately not talk about it." It expresses a new space that is "invisible but certainly exists," born when the "air" we create unconsciously interacts with the "air" of others, each with a different color. This exhibition features dozens of canvas works, including large-scale paintings, and four soft sculptures. Additionally, Mayumi Yamase's first monograph will be published by Hidden Champion during the exhibition. Enjoy the artist through both the exhibition and the monograph.
