LURF GALLERY is pleased to announce the holding of Shinpei Yoshida's solo exhibition "The Living Room" on the first floor.
Yoshida Shinpei has depicted the fragments of everyday life captured in photographs, imagining the presence of people not captured in the images. At the heart of his work lies a focus on those who do not appear on screen, namely the gaze of the person holding the camera and the warmth that resides in the moment.
The portraits he paints do not simply depict a specific person, but rather bring to light everyday memories, layers of time, the margins of forgetting, and the feelings that were certainly directed towards them.
This exhibition features a series of works born out of this exploration. New portraits emerge from the overlapping of past and present, memory and emptiness, evoking intimate presences and vague memories that lie dormant within us, while also raising questions about their meaning.
The exhibition will run from Friday, October 10th to Monday, November 3rd, 2025 (national holiday).

Artist Statement
A few years ago, I came across an old family album at a flea market in a small town in Hamburg. The photos in it showed the humble everyday life of a family who certainly lived in some distant town at some time in time.
What particularly caught my interest was the presence of a person who must have been on the "other side" of the family depicted in the photograph, but who does not appear in the photograph - the father of the family who was holding the camera.
What kind of houses did they live in? What was the name of the tree in the garden that could be seen from their window? What were their thoughts as they watched over their wives and children and lived their lives to the fullest? As I looked back through the photo albums, the profiles of these absent people floated in the back of my eyelids.
One of the reasons for my portrait series was that I began imagining the "extremely intimate gaze" that a single person might have cast on their family.
It is also a long journey to search for the destination of the intimate and irreplaceable gaze that someone may have once directed at us, and the hazy portraits are not simply a representation of someone, but could also be called a record of the blank space that someone's ``feelings'' were directed at us in days gone by.
When you stand before a painting, relationships that did not even exist in your memory quietly float in the air, and the image of a certain individual who is intimate with someone emerges.

2014 Graduated from Kyoto University of Arts (formerly Kyoto University of Art and Design) Western Painting Course
He is currently based in Tokyo and primarily works in painting. In 2018, he participated in an artist-in-residence program at the artist-run space FRISE in Hamburg, Germany. During his residency in Hamburg, he came across an old family album from a stranger at a flea market, and developed a portrait series inspired by the family and their gaze that supposedly once existed. Touching on the themes of "presence and absence" and "memory and forgetting," he attempts to question the precariousness of the obscured, the forgotten, and the invisible in a modern world where everything that is "visible" can be shared with others.
